Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian and Aboriginal art, as well as the art of other cultures.
This course explores the field of commercial art with a focus on print advertising. Students will be introduced to the methods of graphic design including basic design, typography, layout and illustration. Students will develop traditional graphic art techniques as well as a variety of digital skills. Commercial design history will be explored.
This animation course is intended for independent, motivated learners who have an interest in exploring both traditional and digital forms of animation. Students will learn about the history behind the technology of animation - as well as have the opportunity to creatively apply their skills in a variety of media including claymation.
Students will practice drawing from a variety of popular cultural styles. The studio component will cover fundamentals of drawing and anatomy as well as apply different media and technologies. Specialized skills in the fields of applied art and design will be further developed and culminate with a portfolio by the end of the course.
This course introduces students to the four basic hand-building techniques, various decorating and glazing techniques as well as the use of the potter’s wheel. Students will design and create original pieces of pottery and will study selected topics in the history of ceramics related to the studio projects. After this course or students may use the objects made in this course as part of their portfolio for post secondary institutes.
This is a studio art course where students will create original artwork using vector illustration. Both traditional and digital art techniques will be explored. Emphasis is on personal expression. Students will make connections with the elements of design and draw inspiration from a variety of art sources including portraits, still life and conceptual work.
Students will engage in design projects that develop their skills in creating the look and feel of stage productions and screen content. They will learn about the historical developments and examine works to learn about set design and Art Direction. Works may include paintings, photographs, costumes, models and/or sets. This course may serve as a gateway to senior courses in Visual Arts.
Digital Photo Imaging is an emerging field that builds on traditional film-based processes. The course is electronic and computer based. Students will capture, retouch, manipulate and output original digital images. Photo history and the use of equipment are also explored. Contemporary photographers and photo history will be studied.
Students will work individually to prepare a portfolio for post secondary art education. The creative process will be applied and documented throughout the course.
